The tenure-track system is a faculty appointment mechanism under which CAMS PUMC selects outstanding faculty members who meet the requirements after a certain probationary period and grants them tenured appointments with substantial teaching and research resources, competitive financial support, and a high degree of academic freedom. The CAMS PUMC tenure-track faculty system operates alongside the traditional professional title and appointment system to jointly encourage teaching, research and clinical staff to engage in high-level teaching and research work.
Faculty members in the tenure-track system comprise four academic ranks: Tenured Professor, Tenured Associate Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor. Tenured Professor and Tenured Associate Professor are tenured positions, while Associate Professor and Assistant Professor are tenure-track positions. In principle, faculty members should first apply for tenure-track positions; however, candidates with exceptionally distinguished achievements may apply directly for tenured positions.
Faculty members appointed to tenure-track or tenured positions are required to work at CAMS PUMC on a full-time basis.
(Ⅰ) Tenured Professor
Academic experience:Applicants are generally expected to hold a faculty position at the rank of Tenured Associate Professor (for at least three years) or above, or serve as a Research Fellow or in an equivalent position, at a world-renowned university ranked among the top 50 globally overall or top 20 in the relevant discipline, or at a research institution of equivalent caliber. Alternatively, applicants may hold a professorship or equivalent position at a leading university or research institution in China.
Academic qualifications: Applicants should be recognized as leaders in their field of discipline in China, with outstanding achievements in teaching, scientific research, and public service. They should demonstrate a clear vision for the development of their discipline and have attained accomplishments widely acknowledged by peers both in China and internationally. They are expected to have produced landmark research outcomes or established distinctive and influential academic perspectives, ideas, or theories, and possess the ability to independently lead major scientific research work.
(Ⅱ) Tenured Associate Professor
Academic experience:Applicants are generally expected to hold a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (for at least three years) or above, or hold an equivalent position, at a world-renowned university ranked among the top 50 globally overall or top 20 in the relevant discipline, or at a research institution of equivalent caliber. Alternatively, applicants may serve as a Professor or Research Fellow, or hold an equivalent position, at a leading university or research institution in China. Applicants should also possess the ability to independently lead major scientific research work.
Academic qualifications: Applicants should be recognized as academic leaders in relevant fields and demonstrate the potential to become leaders in their field of discipline. They should have clearly defined research areas, with research achievements that are primarily the result of work conducted under their independent leadership and have a high degree of originality. Applicants are also expected to have a substantial body of scholarly output that has attracted significant attention from experts in their field.
(Ⅲ) Associate Professor
Academic experience:Applicants should have independently undertaken national scientific research projects.
Academic qualifications: Applicants should be key figures in their field of discipline and among the top-notch talent of their career stage in the relevant field. They should have clearly defined research areas, with high-quality representative achievements to which they have made significant contributions. Their research should demonstrate independent thinking and potential for future development. Applicants should also have established a recognized reputation among experts in their field of discipline.
(Ⅳ) Assistant Professor
Academic experience: Applicants are generally expected to have completed a full postdoctoral training program, or have at least two years of research experience after obtaining a doctoral degree.
Academic qualifications: Applicants should be recognized as academic backbones in relevant fields and demonstrate the potential to develop into leaders in their field of discipline. They should possess strong academic research and teaching capabilities, demonstrate innovation in their research, have established a distinctive research focus at the forefront of their discipline, and achieved notable academic accomplishments. They should also possess the ability to independently undertake national scientific research projects.
II.Compensation and Benefits for Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty
In addition to the support provided by the state, local governments, and their school/institute/hospital, successful candidates appointed to tenure-track or tenured faculty positions will be offered a comprehensive remuneration package, including but not limited to the following:
(1) Annual salary: A competitive annual salary benchmarked against leading institutions both in China and internationally.
(2) Relocation allowance: Candidates appointed before joining CAMS PUMC or within two years of employment may be eligible for a relocation allowance.
(3) Institutional staffing: Eligible candidates may receive assistance with household registration in accordance with relevant regulations and be incorporated into the staffing system of public institutions.
(4) Healthcare benefits: Access to high-quality medical services through six nationally leading affiliated hospitals, i.e., Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), Fuwai Hospital, Cancer Hospital, Plastic Surgery Hospital, Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital (Tianjin), and Hospital for Skin Diseases (Nanjing). Additional healthcare support is available through the Institute of Geriatrics (based at Beijing Hospital), the Institute of Respiratory Medicine (based at China-Japan Friendship Hospital), and the West China Research Base (based at West China Hospital of Sichuan University).
(5) Independent principal investigator (PI) status: They may establish and lead their own research groups as independent PIs and, in accordance with relevant regulations, will be provided with independent laboratory facilities and office space.
(6) Academic leave: Tenured Professors and Tenured Associate Professors are eligible for six months of academic leave after every four years of service.
(7) Funding support: They will receive priority access to stable CAMS PUMC funding, including support through programs such as the Medical and Health Science and Technology Innovation Project of CAMS. Candidates appointed before joining CAMS PUMC or within two years of employment may also be eligible for research start-up funding.
(8) Team support: Support will be provided for the recruitment of key research personnel and the establishment of a stable research team. They will receive priority consideration in recruiting postdoctoral researchers.
(9) Enrollment support: They may be granted streamlined recognition as supervisors of doctoral and master’s students. Priority will be given in the allocation of graduate student enrollment quotas, with at least one doctoral student position allocated annually. Outstanding graduate students may receive project support from the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities.
(10) Teaching support: They will be given priority in offering specialized courses and undertaking teaching tasks.
(11) Academic governance: They are entitled to vote on academic matters involving faculty positions at their own rank and below within the relevant faculty systems.
(12) Equipment support: Leveraging special funding designated for improving research conditions at central-level public scientific research institutions, they will receive priority support for the acquisition of major research equipment and the development of high-level technical platforms.
(13) Platform support: Extensive academic platforms and research resources will be provided through CAMS PUMC’s 25 directly affiliated institutes, 6 affiliated hospitals, 14 schools, 37 national research base platforms, and 82 provincial- or ministerial-level research base platforms, as well as an open national medical science and technology innovation network across the country (comprising 3 research institutes/bases, 4 research centers, 4 workstations, 94 innovation units, and 113 National Health Commission (NHC) Key Laboratories.
